How will Walt Disney Studios films fare at the 2017 Oscars? Let’s take a look at what we know about the films up for nomination, and their competition.
Best Animated Feature Film
ZOOTOPIA and MOANA have been nominated, alongside KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI and THE RED TURTLE. Since ZOOTOPIA took the top spot at the Golden Globes this year, it is the frontrunner for the Oscar nod. The film is a surprising box office darling, racking up $1.023 billion worldwide and landing at the 7th highest domestic gross of 2016. MOANA is currently at $555 million worldwide.
I am slightly biased towards ZOOTOPIA as I know the work that went into creating this film. I was treated to a Behind-The-Scenes look at ZOOTOPIA before the release. MOANA has a chance, but I think the race for Best Animated Feature will ultimately be between ZOOTOPIA and KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS.
My pick? ZOOTOPIA.
Best Visual Effects
This category is far more nail-biting than Best Picture this year. All 5 of the films nominated have broken ground in visual effects. ROGUE ONE is up against THE JUNGLE BOOK, DOCTOR STRANGE, KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS and DEEPWATER HORIZON.
THE JUNGLE BOOK, as it says at the end of the credits, was filmed entirely in Downtown LA. Yet it looks like a lush jungle world every step of the way, with real jaguars, tigers and bears. DOCTOR STRANGE really pushed the envelope when it came to VFX. The director, Scott Derrickson, said he would ask his VFX team every day to do something they had never done before. And in 3D this film really pops.
But ROGUE ONE may have topped them all. The team at ILM resurrected an actor that died in 1994. Governor Tarkin came alive on-screen thanks to a full plaster cast of Peter Cushing’s face. On-set actor Guy Henry and the ingenuity of the VFX crew completed the trifecta of amazing visual effects that wouldn’t have been possible just one year ago.
My pick? ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.
Best Original Song
MOANA has a beautiful score and the song, “How Far I’ll Go” by Lin-Manuel Miranda is up for Best Original Song. It’s definitely catchy. But is it as catchy as “Let It Go” from FROZEN? Is any song?? “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from TROLLS will try to compete. With the most Oscar Nominations, LA LA LAND has 2 Best Original Songs competing against each other, which could hinder that film: “Audition” and “City of Stars.” The wild card is “The Empty Chair” from JIM: THE JAMES FOLEY STORY.
Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” made Billboard Chart history, tying Adele’s “Hello” for the quickest rise to #1 of Adult Pop Songs. If LA LA LAND had only one song in contention, it would be my pick. While not always a barometer for Oscar Wins, the Billboard Chart Topper has a leg up on the competition.
My pick? “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from TROLLS.
