About DEATH ON THE NILE
Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against an epic landscape of sweeping desert vistas and the majestic Giza pyramids, this tale of unbridled passion and incapacitating jealousy features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travelers, and enough wicked twists and turns to leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking denouement.

DEATH ON THE NILE is a remake of the 1978 film of the same name and based on the Agatha Christie 1937 novel. It’s the classic who-done-it-murder mystery tale with love, heartbreak, jealousy, and murder all in one movie.
The film is an entertaining romp very similar to CLUE or the recent KNIVES OUT. With the latter two films, very few could have predicted the ending. DEATH ON THE NILE, however, telegraphed the murderer halfway through. Even though my mind was not fully blown by the final reveal, I enjoyed the heck out of it.
The first ten+ minutes of the film chronicle the detective’s backstory which takes place during World War I. This felt so disconnected from the rest of the movie that I thought I had walked into the wrong theater! The pacing could have benefited from diving into the murder mystery aspect much quicker. Those are really my only two issues with the movie itself.
The performances of Kenneth Branagh (director and Detective), Tom Bateman (Bouc), Annette Bening (Bouc’s mom), Russell Brand (Doctor/Lynnette’s ex), Ali Fazal (The Cousin), Dawn French (Bowers), Gal Gadot (Lynnette), Armie Hammer (Simon), Rose Leslie (Louisa), Emma Mackey (Jacqueline/Simon’s ex), Sophie Okonedo (Sophie), Jennifer Saunders (Marie Van Schuyler Linnet’s godmother), and Letitia Wright (Sophie’s niece) were all very well done, although some of the accents were hard to understand at times. But the breakout performance had to be Russell Brand! I had to do a double take to make sure it was him! unlike his over-exaggerated and annoying characters in GET HIM TO THE GREEK and FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, here he plays a nice, caring doctor and it was really refreshing.
Despite some small issues that I had with the movie, it is very entertaining with fun twists and turns. Even though DEATH ON THE NILE is a remake, these actors bring something different to the characters which makes it worth the journey.
