Science at SDCC!
As the co-creator of Sar Warsologies, it’s no secret that I love talking about science in pop culture. Geeking out with people about how real-life science influences movies and TV shows (and sometime vice versa) is one of my favorite things to do. As is going to San Diego Comic-Con! So of course I scoured the programming schedule for as many science topics and scientist panelists as I could fined. There’s more than ever this year, it will be impossible to do it all. But here’s a quick list of the science activities I am involved in to get you started.
For the first time, there’s a hands-on STEAM activity room as part of the con! The If/Then ambassadors, Fleet Science Center, Cosplay for Science, and Star Warsologies teamed up to make this happen and we’re so excited. Scientists will facilitate activity tables for people of all ages. It’s happening every day Thursday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm over in the Marriott Marquis’s Del Mar Room, which is near the Marina Ballrooms on the third floor of the South Tower. Come check it out, have some hands-on fun, and learn some cool science!

The science panel that I pitched and will be moderating this year is centered around Tom Cruise movies! We’re going to cover aliens, espionage, and aviation – plus the physics and anatomy of all those stunts.

Of course we had to do a science of Star Wars panel! This year, James is teaming up with the Fleet Science Center to talk everything Mandalorian. The panel of scientists are ready to share their expertise and also their love of Star Wars.

The Mixer for Science-Minded Geeks is a great place to chat with cool people and ask any burning pop culture science questions. The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask! We’ll have dozens of scientists on hand ready to geek out with you about your favorite fandoms, plus a few short talks from people about how their expertise overlaps with pop culture.

I am so excited to host the panel San Diego On Screen, all about the local filming industry. We’ve got experts on the economic impact and historical impact as well as leaders of the San Diego County Film Initiative and San Diego International Film Festival. Plus two creators of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise, which has filmed five movies in San Diego!
