This book follows two characters from THE ACOLYTE – Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh and Master Indara. It is set decades before THE ACOLYTE and the characters are in very different places. Vernestra is a Jedi Master who has spent years as a Wayseeker. Indara is a young Jedi Knight, not yet the wizened, battle hardened Jedi Master you see in THE ACOLYTE. A Republic senator has formally requested Vernestra’s assistance, so the Jedi Council dispatches Indara to track down Vernestra Rwoh. They find themselves on a mission delving into Republic politics and underworld crime, all the while clashing over their views on how best to serve the Jedi order, the galaxy, and the Force.

Book themes:

  • Explores perspectives of long-lived species vs. humans. The long lifespan of species like Yaddle and Vernestra as a Mirialan gives them a different perspective on current events .
  • Another theme is finding common ground between 2 differing viewpoints. Vernestra and Indara start off very much disliking each other. This turns into a grudging respect, and then a lasting friendship as the two characters learn from and change each other.
  • Explores Jedi role in the galaxy at this point in time around 100 years before the Galactic Republic. Even then, Vernestra is seeing the Republic start to rely too heavily on the Jedi.
