The cast and creative team of Disney+’s NEW out-of-this-world animated movie Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe reunited in a virtual Comic-Con@Home panel on Saturday, July 25.

Stars Ashley Tisdale (Candace), Vincent Martella (Phineas), Maulik Pancholy (Baljeet) and Dee Bradley Baker (Perry the Platypus) were joined by creators/executive producers Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and director Bob Bowen to discuss the origins of the iconic animated series and share exclusive sneak peeks. Variety’s Michael Schneider moderated.

Premiering on Disney+ on Friday, August 28, Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe is an adventure story featuring Candace.

Synopsis: Stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb, their older sister Candace, Perry the Platypus and the Danville gang are back together again in “Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe,” an out-of-this-world animated adventure from Disney Television Animation. Executive-produced by Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh (creators and executive producers of the long-running Emmy Award-winning series “Phineas and Ferb”), the movie centers on Phineas and Ferb as they set out across the galaxy to rescue Candace, who after being abducted by aliens, finds utopia in a far-off planet, free of pesky little brothers.

Before writing this film, Phineas & Ferb Creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh asked themselves “what story have we not told? And we never had Candace be the hero, and we’ve never really put anybody in any danger. So let’s focus on Candace and do a space adventure!”

All Candace wants to do is bust her brothers, and in this film she finally finds a place where the world is not against her. Ashley Tisdale shared her thoughts on voicing Candace. “Candace is one of my favorite characters I get to play. My crazy comes out in her, because she’s one of the craziest characters I play. I can only do two-hour sessions because she absolutely drains my energy.”

In voicing Candace, Ashley realized that Candace always wants to be the star of the show, and in this movie she finally gets to be that. “The music elements of the movie are so, so good. Some of the best stuff is in this movie.”

The film begins with “Such A Beautiful Day,” performed by Ashley Tisdale, and here is the exclusive sneak peek!

Dan explained that the song “Such A Beautiful Day” was one of the last songs written because the beginning of the movie originally contained three different openings where Candace was more snarky and unlikeable. For new audiences, they decided to put in “Such A Beautiful Day” instead.

Voice Actors Growing Up with Phineas & Ferb

The longevity of Phineas & Ferb is not lost on the cast. “I’ve been playing Phineas since I was 13, and I’m 27 now,” said Vincent Martella. “I’m excited for everyone to see this movie because it’s everything that people love about the series, in a way that introduces it to new audiences.”

Maulik Pancholy (Baljeet) continued the thought: “I spent a month and a half on book tour and I visited dozens of middle schools. To get to play a character that you get to see that impact, and also 30-year-olds who watched it as kids when it first came out, it’s so gratifying.”

Dee Bradley Baker, voice actor known for making weird sounds and animal noises for 100’s of projects, sometimes feels like an imposter. “It’s like this superpower magic trick that I can just pull out of my pocket. People get so excited. But I feel like an imposter because what I do is so simple. I almost have nothing to do about this thing your so excited about, but I go with it because it just makes them feel so happy. Phineas & Ferb is such a sweet, beautiful, smart show. Timeless.”
